Day 13 September- International Chocolate Day

Day 13 September- International Chocolate Day

International Chocolate Day is celebrated on September 13 annually. The day was established by the U.S. National Confectioners Association. It commemorates the birth of Milton S. Hershey. He was an American chocolatier, businessman, and philanthropist.

Chocolate is one of the world’s favorite flavors, possibly THE most loved taste across 7 continents. This magic bean has been consumed by humans from as far back as 1900 BC, and was an integral part of the Aztec and Mayan civilisations and culture. Europeans combined it with milk and sugar, and with the Industrial Revolution and mass production, the modern era of chocolate began. Some references indicate that this day celebrates the introduction of chocolate to Europe in 1550. Though it originated in the Americas, today the small African country of Cote D’Ivoire produces 30% of the world’s cocoa. Everyone loves it, the recipes are endless and September 13th is celebrated as international chocolate day.

Day 23 September 2024- International Day of Sign Languages

Day 23 September 2024- International Day of Sign Languages

On 23rd September, the UN General Assembly proclaimed the day as International Day of Sign Languages. The day provides a unique opportunity to support and protect the linguistic identity and cultural diversity of all deaf people and other sign language users.

According to the World Federation of the Deaf, there are approximately 72 million deaf people worldwide. More than 80% of them live in developing countries. Collectively, they use more than 300 different sign languages.

Sign languages are fully fledged natural languages, structurally distinct from the spoken languages. There is also an international sign language, which is used by deaf people in international meetings and informally when travelling and socializing. It is considered a pidgin form of sign language that is not as complex as natural sign languages and has a limited lexicon.

The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities recognizes and promotes the use of sign languages. It makes clear that sign languages are equal in status to spoken languages and obligates states parties to facilitate the learning of sign language and promote the linguistic identity of the deaf community.

In 2024, India will complete 78 years as an independent nation.

History

In 1757, the East India Company defeated the last Nawab of Bengal in the Battle of Plassey, which marked the beginning of British rule in India. The Indian Rebellion or the First War of Independence took place in 1857 which was a major yet unsuccessful uprising against British rule.

In the year 1885, India’s first political party, the Indian National Congress was formed. After the conclusion of World War I in 1918, Indian activists called for self-rule or ‘Swaraj’.

In 1929, the Indian National Congress declared ‘Purna Swaraj’ or the Independence of India at an assembly in Lahore. Finally, after a series of sessions and meetings between the British government and the Indian National Congress, Lord Mountbatten who served as the last viceroy of pre-independent India, agreed to the proposal.

On 15th August 1947, Lord Mountbatten partitioned British India into two new independent nations; India and Pakistan. This marked the first India Independence Day 1947.

On this day, the national flag of India is hoisted at multiple public places; Prime Minister unfurls the national flag at Red Fort in Delhi to commemorate this historical event. Along with the flag-hoisting ceremony, parade, and folk dance performances also take place. Multiple festivities take place in different parts of the nation.

Academic institutions including schools and colleges, host a special ceremony for enlightening the students about the historical significance of this day. Children fly tri-coloured kites to celebrate this occasion.

Streets, buildings, and public spaces are adorned with the national flag, tri-coloured buntings, and decorative lights. It is customary to distribute sweets, particularly laddoos, as a gesture of joy and harmony. People exchange sweets with friends, neighbours, and colleagues, spreading the festive spirit of India Independence Day. The flag hoisting ceremony at the Red Fort in Delhi is telecast live on national television and streamed online along with many patriotic Indian films to watch on Independence Day.

Day 13 August - International Lefthanders Day

Day 13 August - International Lefthanders Day

Every year on 13 August Lefthanders Day is observed. It raises awareness about the problems and difficulties that left-handed persons faced.

From scissors to knives, from can openers to cork screws, Left Handers (also sometimes called Southpaws) can be the brunt of jokes all year long due to their unique hand dominance.

But this is the day to ignore all of that and bring awareness to all of those right handed folks around the globe in celebration of Left Handers Day. After all, as the old saying goes– right handed people operate on the left side of the brain, which means that left handed people are functioning on the right side. Therefore, only left handed people are in their right mind!

It’s time to take a look at Left Handers Day!

History of Left Handers Day

Celebrating its first year of existence in 1976, the Lefthanders International organization helped raise awareness to the myriad of difficulties that can be faced by people who are left handed.

Being accused of witchcraft in the 1600s for just using one hand more than the other, was only the beginning! Since only 10 percent of the population is left handed, various items made especially for those who are left-handed are typically more expensive than their right handed counterparts.

Objects such as scissors, knives and even school desks can see a mark up of almost 75 percent more for left handed individuals! Even sports fanatics will pay out the nose, as golf clubs sometimes see as much as a 200 percent increase depending on their brand.

But even though it can be difficult and, admittedly, a bit more expensive, those left handers in the world are certainly unique and interesting people. And this is the perfect day to celebrate them!

How to Celebrate Left Handers Day

Celebrating Left Handers Day is a fun and simple way to acknowledge the unique position of those whose dominant hand is their left. Try celebrating in these ways:

Brag About Being Left Handed

For those who are left handed, today is the day to celebrate and enjoy! Wear a left-handers t-shirt or make a proud post on social media. Embrace this special quality and show that pride in being left handed!

Appreciate a Left Handed Person

Those who aren’t left handed can contact those friends and family members who are left handed and give them a congratulatory hug for the struggles they have faced in their lifetimes! Tell them how interesting they are and how much they are appreciated for their contributions to the world. Take them to lunch or coffee and offer to try eating with the opposite hand to see what it’s like.
